Fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine

Hospital for Special Surgery is an elective orthopaedic surgical hospital in New York City, whose Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to the practice of regional anesthesia, and to educating the next generation of regional anesthesiologists.

More than 31,000 anesthetic procedures are performed annually in our operating rooms with over 90% employing regional anesthesia including:
  • upper and lower extremity plexus and nerve blocks
  • central neuraxial blocks
  • catheter techniques
  • nerve stimulator localization techniques
  • ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks
Over 11,000 patients are seen annually by our Acute Pain Service with postoperative pain management interventions that include intravenous, neuraxial, and peripheral techniques, and in-dwelling catheters.

Fellows also gain experience in:
  • perioperative management of complex patients undergoing orthopaedic surgical procedures
  • use of regional anesthesia and perioperative management of pediatric patients
  • utilization of regional anesthesia for ambulatory surgery procedures
Our Department offers a full, CME-accredited, academic program featuring a Grand Rounds lecture series, literature reviews, interdisciplinary conferences, research forums, Oral Board reviews, and morbidity and mortality conferences. Additional formalized educational programs include a monthly presentation geared specifically towards the Fellows’ advanced level of knowledge, and experience in the cadaver lab.

Fellows also have the opportunity to teach visiting medical students in our operating rooms, to instruct in anatomy courses at Weill Cornell Medical College, and to participate as faculty in our annual Regional Anesthesia Symposium: “Controversies and Fundamentals in Regional Anesthesia”, now in its second decade.

Two Fellowship Tracks options:

A one-year fellowship focused on clinical training, which will include academic activity such as an IRB-approved research experience, or other educational project

A two-year clinical/research fellowship culminating in an advanced scientific certification/degree – this is intended for Fellows interested in an academic career (availability for this track is limited to 1 Fellow per application year)
