PhD fellowship in demonstration and integration of energy saving LED luminaires for greenhouses

The Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake research in the demonstration and integration of energy saving LED luminaires for greenhouses.

The purpose of the PhD project is to give evidence that energy saving LED luminaires can substitute traditional lighting systems used in greenhouses. The aim is therefore to demonstrate that the plants produced under LED luminaires are similar or even better plants than those produced traditionally.

Furthermore light affects secondary metabolite production in plants. As some of these metabolites are reported to be important factors in the defense system of the plant this project intends to investigate the effect of spectral distribution and intensity on the content of these components in the plant.

In order to study the effect of lighting on the plant growth, the plants will be grown in reactors where parameters of their surroundings can be controlled and monitored. Under these controlled conditions lighting will be modified and the plant photosynthesis and growth will be monitored. The lab experiment will be up-scaled to greenhouses to evaluate the effect of the light sources on growth and performance of selected plant species.

The PhD fellow will work in the interdisciplinary research field of chemical engineering, natural product chemistry and plant physiology.

The PhD fellowship requires an MSc degree in chemical engineering, biochemistry, plant physiology or related disciplines. Advanced level of speaking, writing and reading English is required. The applicant should demonstrate research potential as reflected by for instance the grades obtained and the master’s thesis. Good knowledge about plant physiology, chromatography (HPLC and GC) and natural product chemistry is desirable.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1. October 2008 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

Students must have either graduated from a Scandinavian MSc program, an MSc program in English, have English as their native language, or alternatively have passed a language test at the level demanded by University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Engineering (minimum scores: IELTS 6.5 points; Paper-based TOEFL 575 points; Computer based TOEFL 230, Internet-based TOEFL 88 points).
